For most people, March means the start of Spring, Easter bunnies, Easter eggs and the clocks going forward.
If you’re a member of Toastmasters, it also means that it’s time to hone your speaking skills and get ready for the International Speech Contest!
The International Speech Contest works a bit like the FA Cup, in that each club holds its own contest (round 1), the winners from each club go forward to the area contest (round 2) and so on – until you get to the final, which takes place at the Toastmasters International Convention. This year’s International Convention is in August in Las Vegas.
What about you? Are you a champion in the making? If you’ve not experienced a Toastmasters meeting before, why not come along and experience the excitement that happens at contest time. It’s highly likely that you’ll be inspired and entertained too.
The two clubs in Leeds are holding their own separate contests and here are the dates for your diary:
- Leeds City Toastmasters – Thursday 5th March at 7pm – taking place at the Novotel Hotel, Whitehall Quay, Leeds LS1 4HR
- White Rose Speakers – Wednesday 11th March at 7pm – taking place at the Jury’s Inn Hotel, Brewery Wharf, Leeds LS10 1NE
Attending a Toastmasters meeting is free of charge, and you’re under no obligation to join.
Come along, find out how Toastmasters can help you, have an enjoyable evening out, but most importantly – see if Leeds has a world champion in the making!
Happy New Year!
If you’ve made a new year’s resolution to become more confident, practise your public speaking/presentation/leadership skills, make new friends, try something different, or even just to get out of the house a couple of times a month then give White Rose Speakers a try!
Start the year as you mean to go on – work on your confidence and learn to speak in a way that entices people to listen and pay attention. Come to our next meeting on Wednesday 14th January (6.45pm – 9 or 9.30pm at the Jurys Inn) to find out more about how Toastmasters can help you!
Just a reminder that the meeting on Wednesday 10 December will be at a different venue to normal – please email firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
You might recall that Andy Nichols, one of the members of White Rose Speakers, recently won the Area Humorous Speech contest.
Not one to pass up a chance to practice his public speaking, when given the opportunity to re-run his contest winning speech at work he jumped at the chance, and the result is below.
We can forgive him for running over the usual 7 minutes 30 seconds since we understand that he was given a longer timeslot and did not have a timekeeper on hand to show him the red (or green or amber) card!
Thank you to all involved in putting together last night’s joint meeting as part of Leeds Business Week, and to those who came along an participated.
We had a great evening with lots of really brave guests and budding speakers.
We hope that our visitors got a feel for what Toastmasters has to offer them, and encourage them to find out more by coming along to one (or more!) of our next meetings:

On a day filled with laughter, Andy Nichols of Leeds and Andrew Miller of Doncaster took the honours in the Toastmasters Area 15 humorous and impromptu speaking contests which were recently held in Doncaster.
Andy (representing White Rose Speakers with a speech entitled “15 minutes of fame”) fought off stiff competition to win the humorous speech contest, while Andrew (representing Doncaster Speakers) won through in an equally challenging Table Topics (impromptu speaking) contest.
Frederika Roberts, who attended the contest, said:
“It was a fantastic day with lots of fun/laughter but also many opportunities to learn from watching all the winners from the different Area 15 clubs and network with Toastmasters from outside our own club. Attending Area/Division/District contests is a brilliant way to observe and learn from great speakers.
The judges had a challenging task as the level was very high in both contests.”
Congratulations go to Anthony Day (from Leeds City Toastmasters and runner up in the humorous speech contest) and Andrew Miller who will be representing the Area in the Division contest in Harrogate on 26 October.
Well done also to all those who participated and many thanks to the team of Judges, Counters and Organisers.
Toastmasters helps you develop public speaking and leadership skills. It says that on the tin. However, when you really get into it, Toastmasters offers so much more than that. It gives you the confidence to go out there and face your fears.
Eighteen months ago, I attended my first Toastmasters meeting. I didn’t realise at the time, indeed if someone had suggested it to me I would have backed away – but that was the start of an amazing journey that would lead me to be president of the club.
In that time I have developed as a speaker.
More importantly however, is that I have gained the confidence to go out and pursue my goals in life. Earlier this week I published my first book, the Leeds Restaurant Guide. Without the skills of staying focused on my goals, time management and confidence that I gained through Toastmasters, I never would have made to to the attend.
It isn’t just your presentation skills that increase when you join Toastmasters. It brings wider benefits to many other areas of your life too.
The Area 15 (comprising of clubs from Hull, Leeds, Doncaster, Sheffield and Cummins) was held at Holiday Express Inn, Hull on 7th Apr 2013.
Leeds clubs (White Rose Speakers and Leeds City Toastmasters) were represented by three contestants – Chris Worfolk (International speaking – Leeds City Toastmasters and Evaluation – White Rose Speakers), Erik Bentham (International Speaking – White Rose Speakers) and Dinesh Kaulgud (Evaluation Contest – Leeds City Toastmasters).
The standard at the contest was very high with some amazing speeches from the contestants. I’m proud to report that our Leeds clubs performed brilliantly and won accolades at the contest.
Chris Worfolk won the International Speaking contest. His speech was entitled ‘Easy or worthwhile’ and it was about his dreams of becoming an Astronaut as a child but settling for something easy. He mentioned that each time the International space station orbited the Earth he was reminded of his dream. So he set about overcoming his fear of enclosed spaces. Chris’s speech was full of subtle humor and delivered with superb gestures which brought the speech alive – a worthy winner.
In the Evaluation contest, first place was taken by Jamie Godfry from Doncaster Speakers, Dinesh Kaulgud (Leeds City Toastmasters) won the second place and Chris (representing White Rose Speakers) once again displayed his fine speaking skills by winning the third place in the evaluation contest.
Chris will go on to represent Leeds City Toastmasters at the Division E contest which will be held in York on 28th Apr 2013.
We wish him the very best for the Division E contest.
